The Department of Internal Medicine at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) was established in 1921, the year the hospital was founded, making it one of the earliest clinical departments and the birthplace of modern internal medicine in China. Over its century-long history, the Department has consistently upheld the principle of 'patients first' in clinical care, the scholarly ethos of 'three fundamentals and three strictnesses' (i.e., fundamental theories, knowledge, and skills; strict requirements, rigorous attitudes, and serious discipline), and a philosophy of pioneering innovation. It has steadfastly preserved and carried forward key traditions including the Grand Rounds in Internal Medicine, the Resident Physician Training Program, and the Chief Resident Program—nurturing generations of eminent physicians, academic leaders, and highly competent medical professionals. Starting with just dozens of staff members and five subspecialty groups, the Department has grown steadily into a large-scale unit comprising over 800 personnel across 12 subspecialties: Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Hematology, Rheumatology and Immunology, Infectious Diseases, General Internal Medicine, Oncology, Geriatrics, Endocrinology, and the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). Nine of these subspecialties rank among the top ten nationally in the Fudan University Hospital Rankings.
